Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *skuti. Cognate with Bulgarian ску́бя (skúbja), Serbo-Croatian скупти/skupti, Slovene oskubiti (pluck). Non-Slavic cognates include Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (afskiuban), Old Norse skúfa and skýfa (to push, shove), German schieben, Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣubhyati, to shake, be agitated), Persian آشفتن (âšoftan, to agitate). Compare Slovak and Czech chyba.
