Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀪𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀕 (bhallaga), from Sanskrit भल्ल (bhalla, “auspicious, favourable”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Many Indo-Aryan languages share an unexplained shortening of the -ll- or later of the -ā- in this word.
