From Pali guṇa (cord; fibre; quality) or from Sanskrit गुण (guṇa, quality, feature, attribute; merit, virtue; etc); probably via Old Khmer គុណ (guṇa, attribute; excellence; interest; merit; property; quality; supernatural power; virtue). Cognate with Lao ຄຸນ (khun); Khmer គុណ (kun); Old Javanese guṇa.

  • (noble title): If the woman is married, the title คุณหญิง (kun-yǐng) is used. As for the woman who is a member of the special second class or higher class, the title ท่านผู้หญิง (tân-pûu-yǐng) is used, irrespective of the marital status.
