From Middle High German rëgenboge, from Old High German reginbogo, from Proto-West Germanic *regnabogō. Equivalent to Regen (rain) +‎ Bogen (bow, arch, arc). Compare Dutch regenboog, English rainbow, Yiddish רעגנבויגן (regnboygn), Danish regnbue, Icelandic regnbogi.
