Etymology[edit]
From German Low German and Middle Low German rīge, ultimately from a derivative of Proto-Germanic *raih- (“row, line”).
Cognate with Middle High German rīge (“line, row, array”). Originating from Northern Germany, Friedrich Jahn, a German gymnastics educator and nationalist, introduced this Low German term in the early 19th century.
