From the participle of zbath, from Proto-Indo-European *bhoso-s (naked). Cognate to Old Church Slavonic bosъ (bosŭ), Lithuanian bãsas, Latvian bass (barefoot), Old High German bar, Old English bær, Old Norse berr (naked, bare).
