Liddell and Scott propose Sanskrit दृषद् (dṛṣad) as a cognate. However, Pokorny argues for an origin from Proto-Indo-European *gʷer-, citing Sanskrit गिरि (giri) as a cognate. Beekes argues for a Pre-Greek origin.
