Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Either cognate or borrowing of Russian василиск (vasilisk) or Ukrainian василіск (vasylisk). Likely either inherited from Old East Slavic василискъ (vasiliskŭ) or borrowed from Old Church Slavonic василискъ (vasiliskŭ), ultimately from Byzantine Greek βασιλίσκος (basilískos). Alternatively, might be borrowed from German Basilisk or Latin basiliscus and modified under the influence of Greek borrowings like Васи́лий (Vasílij).
