Etymology[edit]
Probably from Proto-Slavic *lěpyrь; equivalent to лепя́ (lepjá, “to stick up”) + -ир (-ir). Compare also Serbo-Croatian ле̏птӣр (“butterfly”) (usually thought to be of Greek origin).
