Etymology[edit]

Most likely Belarusian го́йдаць (hójdacʹ) and/or Ukrainian гойда́ти (hojdáty) +‎ ־ען (-en), apparently of onomatopoeic origin. Compare also Slovak hojdať (to rock, to swing). Semantically, derived from Belarusian гайда́цца (hajdácca) and Ukrainian гойда́тися (hojdátysja).
