Yiddish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Old High German arg +‎ ־סט (-st) with umlaut. Compare German ärgsten, and more distantly Dutch ergst. Supplanted the original superlative of שלעכט (shlekht), which likely would have been *שלעכטסט (*shlekhtst).
