From Aramaic חַדְתָּא (ḥaḏtā), from Proto-Semitic *ḥdṯ- (to be new); cognate with Arabic حَدِيث (ḥadīṯ), Hebrew חָדָשׁ (khadásh) and Akkadian 𒉋 (eššum).
