Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian عاشقی ('āšiqī, “being in love, falling in love”), derived from عاشق ('āšiq, “in love”) + ی (-ī), the former from Arabic عاشِق (ʕāšiq). Analysable within Hindi as आशिक़ (āśiq, “lover”) + -ई (-ī).
