Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ʰagẓʰ-, reduplication of the root *ȷ́ʰas- (to laugh); whence also हसति (hasati). Also compare Pali jagghati (he laughs, ridicules). See the root हस् (has) for more.
