Etymology[edit]

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰl̥h₃rós with inexplicable initial devoicing, from *bʰleh₃-, and compared with Ancient Greek φύλλον (phúllon), Latin folium, English bloom. However, Mayrhofer considers this derivation outdated, and prefers to link the term to स्फुट् (sphuṭ, to burst, blossom) or less likely फल् (phal, to burst, cleave open).
