From Proto-Indo-Iranian *sr̥prás, from Proto-Indo-European *sl̥p-rós, from *selp- (fat, oil). Cognate with Old English sealf (whence English salve), Middle Persian clp (/⁠čarb⁠/), whence Persian چرب (čarb). See also Sanskrit सर्पिस् (sarpís, melted butter, ghee).
