Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀡𑀯𑀺𑀅 (ṇavia), from Sanskrit नव्य (navya), from Proto-Indo-European *néwyos. Cognates include Persian نو (now), Ancient Greek νέος (néos), Russian но́вый (nóvyj), Italian nuovo and English new. Doublet of নব (nobo).
