From Proto-Dravidian *puḷ (sour). Cognate with Telugu పులి (puli), Kannada ಪುಳಿ (puḷi), or ಹುಳಿ (huḷi), Tulu ಪುಳಿ (puḷi), or ಪುಲಿ (puli), Malayalam പുളി (puḷi).
