From Proto-Southwestern Tai *vanᴬ (“to slash”), from Proto-Tai *walᴬ (“to slash”). Cognate with Lao ຟັນ (fan), Shan ၽၼ်း (phán) or ၾၼ်း (fán), Ahom 𑜇𑜃𑜫 (phan) or 𑜇𑜞𑜃𑜫 (phran), Saek วั๋น.

From Proto-Southwestern Tai *vanᴬ (“tooth”), from Proto-Tai *wanᴬ (“tooth”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨼᩢ᩠ᨶ (fan), Ahom 𑜇𑜝𑜃𑜫 (phlan), Zhuang faenz, Bouyei fanz. Within Kra-Dai, compare Sui vyanl, wyanl (“tooth”), Southern Kam bienl, biaenl (“tooth”). Compare also Proto-Austronesian *nipən (whence Tagalog ngipin, Maori niho).
