From Proto-Tai *tacᴰ (“to cut”). Cognate with Thai ตัด (dtàt), Northern Thai ᨲᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lao ຕັດ (tat), Lü ᦶᦎᧆ (ṫaed), Tai Dam ꪔꪰꪒ, Ahom 𑜄𑜄𑜫 (tat), Zhuang daet.
