Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡapᴰˢ⁴ (“narrow; tight; confined”) (Jonsson, 1991), from Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (“tight; narrow”), possibly from Middle Chinese 狹 (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became doublet of ၵႅပ်ႈ (kēp)).
Cognate with Thai คับ (káp), Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), Lü ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Zuojiang Zhuang kaep.
