Etymology[edit]
By surface analysis, ო- -ალე (o- -ale) + შუმ- (şum-). Inherited from Proto-Georgian-Zan *(s)a-s₁wm-el- (“drinking”). Cognate with Georgian სასმელი (sasmeli) and Mingrelian ოშუმალი (ošumali).
