From Old Javanese purī, from Sanskrit पुरी (purī), पुर् (pur, stronghold, fortress), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(t)pĺ̥H (city, fortress, stronghold). Doublet of ᬧᬸᬭ (pura).
