Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Frisk takes it as *ϝαρύω (*warúō) and connects it with Old Armenian գերեմ (gerem, to capture, take prisoner), εὑρίσκω (heurískō, to find), assuming a root *uer-; but the Greek -α- creates difficulties for this etymology.
