Etymology[edit]

Uncertain, but possibly from ἄπαστος (ápastos, fasting). Otherwise, maybe of Semitic origin, compare Arabic حَبَّسَ (ḥabbasa, to imprison), Hebrew חָבַשׁ (ḥāḇaš, to bind, tie) and Safaitic [script needed] (ḥabīsat, enclosure).
