Etymology[edit]
From Dutch kop and also from Portuguese copo. Cognate (via Late Latin cuppa) with カップ (kappu), from English cup.

コップ (koppu) refers specifically to glass containers (tumblers), as for water, while カップ (kappu) refers to cups with handles (mugs), as for coffee or Western tea.
