Etymology[edit]

Stem of 面白い (omoshiroi, interesting), analyzable as (omo, face) +‎ (shiro, white).[1]

First cited to the Kogo Shūi of 807 with the spelling 於茂志呂;[1] the Jōdai Tokushu Kanazukai distinction has been lost at that time.
