Etymology[edit]
Appears to be a coinage in Japanese of Middle Chinese-derived roots, as a compound of 魔 (ma, “supernatural”) + 術 (jutsu, “technique, skill, ability”).[1][2][3] First appears in texts from the early 1500s.[1]
