From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sɛːnᴬ¹ (one hundred thousand) (Jonsson, 1991). Cognate with Thai แสน (sɛ̌ɛn), Northern Thai ᩈᩯ᩠ᨶ, Lao ແສນ (sǣn), ᦶᦉᧃ (ṡaen), Shan သႅၼ် (sěn), Tai Nüa ᥔᥦᥢᥴ (sáen), Phake ꩬိၺ် (siñ).
