Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Old French -ier, from Latin -arius. Doublet of the inherited suffix -aio.
Suffix[edit]
-iere m (noun-forming suffix, plural -ieri, feminine -iera)
- used to form masculine nouns (often of French origin) that represent a person who makes or sells a specified article; -er, -or
- giardino (“garden”) + -iere → giardiniere (“gardener”)
- gioiello (“jewel”) + -iere → gioielliere (“jeweller”)
