Etymology[edit]

Ancient Greek ἄγονος m (ágonos, infertile, barren, sterile) +‎ Ancient Greek πτέρῠξ f (ptérux, wing (of a bird)), literally barren-wing. The nonstandard spelling of the -pterix suffix (usually -pteryx) may suggest Latin or English influence in the taxonomic spelling.
