Etymology[edit]
From irregular French romanization of Arabic أرزيو (“Arzew, Bethioua”), presumably ultimately from Latin Arsenaria, an ancient settlement 3 Roman miles inland from the sea near Bethioua. The name was applied to the present location under French rule.
