Etymology

Borrowed from Latin Austria, from Old High German Ostarrîchi (the first element of which means "east" and stems from Proto-Germanic *austraz (eastern), and the second element of which is rīhhi (realm)). The word was adapted to Latvian spelling ( +‎ -ija.
