Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably a loan translation of Italian Mar Rosso. Inheritance from Arabic الْبَحْر الْأَحْمَر (al-baḥr al-ʔaḥmar) cannot be ruled out entirely, but is very unlikely in light of the fact that Maltese has inherited virtually no geographical names from outside Malta at all.
