This has 417 entries. Who decides which words are basic? --Turnedlessef (talk) 14:36, 18 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Keep. Some words are very obviously basic, and while there is some subjectivity to it, it can still be quite helpful to beginners. I'm using that very category right now to fill in gaps in my Spanish vocab, which is relatively rudimentary at this point. Thus far, it has been quite helpful. Move to Category 417 basic Spanish words since it has 417 entries, to call it 1000 would be misleading. Renard Migrant (talk) 15:59, 20 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Or maybe just Category: Basic Spanish words to allow for the addition or removal of words. Andrew Sheedy (talk) 02:35, 21 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
While I was being sarcastic to highlight the problem, that actually is a good possible solution. These categories do seem to get steadily emptied, and I have no idea why. Renard Migrant (talk) 17:42, 21 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Just noting that we're now at 418. I like Andrew's suggested name. - -sche (discuss) 08:56, 18 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Keep+Rename. These lists are useful. Only Category:1000 Japanese basic words seems to get close to the number, with currently 942 entries. The other languages need some work. Italian has only 8 entries (pasta, pizza, amore and a few others). That's all you need. – Jberkel (talk) 20:23, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I snorted at your observation about the Italian category! - -sche (discuss) 22:26, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have proposed (i.e. publicized Andrew's good idea above) renaming all the basic word categories: see WT:RFM#Basic_word_categories. - -sche (discuss) 22:53, 1 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
@-sche: Why have you deleted Category:1000 basic Portuguese words while these discussions are happening? —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:30, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
I haven't deleted it; it has been renamed, per the RFM discussion. - -sche (discuss) 02:39, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
Renamed to Category:Spanish basic words per the RFM discussion; the discussion above shows no consensus to delete the category, and support for renaming. - -sche (discuss) 07:14, 19 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
