From Danish Claessen, from Dutch Claessen, from Claes (shortened form of Niklaas, Niclaas, Niclaes, ultimately from Ancient Greek Νικόλαος (Nikólaos)) + -sen (patronymic suffix), equivalent to Danish-derived -sen in other Icelandic surnames and ultimately from Proto-Germanic *sunuz (“son”)).
