Etymology[edit]

  • As a Catalan surname, from the saints' name Ginés. Compare Jines.
  • The city in Spain is of unclear origin, but could possibly be a corruption of the source of the saints' name above with an Arabic influence, namely جنة (garden, paradise), referring to the Garden of Eden.
