Maguindanao

Etymology

Either of the following:

• A blend of maginged (“resident”) +‎ danaw (“lake”), which means “people residing at the lake” or “people of the flood”. Compare Maguindanao inged, and Maranao inged.
• From Malay maling (“thief, pirate”) + Malay danau (“lake”) or “pirates of the lake”, associated in Malay history with the worst types of pirates from the island, /l/ has shifted sound to /g/ to be magindanaw. If this is the case, Magindanaw (island of Mindanao) came from an external Malay source and not a native word. Could also be from Old Javanese malin ranu (“thieves of the lake”). Compare Malay lanun, and Iranun.
