- (US, historical) Synonym of Gunpowder Treason Day (now Guy Fawkes Day).
Usage notes[edit]
Largely fell out of favor during the American Revolution, particularly following the admonition by George Washington that such Protestant celebrations were unlikely to aid the colonists in securing help from Catholics in Canada, France, and Spain.
