Proto-Germanic[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
Uncertain. Perhaps from *dungō (“earth, dung”) + *-jǭ. Kroonen, however, derives this via an intermediary verb *dungijaną (“to fertilise”). See Proto-West Germanic *dungijan.
