From Proto-Indo-European *ḱokh₂-.[1] Cognate with Sanskrit शाखा (śākhā, branch), Russian соха́ (soxá, wooden plough), Armenian ցախ (cʻax, branch), Lithuanian šakà (branch), Old Irish géc (branch) and Persian شاخ (šâx, branch).
