Etymology[edit]

Cognate with Sogdian 𐼋𐼊𐼎𐼔𐼁 (kynpʾ /⁠kinapa, kimba⁠/, hemp, flax), Middle Persian [script needed] (kʾnb /⁠kanaβ, kānaβ⁠/), possibly from Proto-Iranian *kanafš ~ *kanabas, *kanapas, perhaps ultimately borrowed from Semitic, compare Classical Syriac ܩܢܦܐ (qnpʾ, hemp), Akkadian 𒋆𒄣𒌦𒈾𒁍 (qunnabu, qunappu, qun(u)bu, hemp).[1][2][3][4]
