Proto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Has been compared with Ancient Greek δολφóς (dolphós, gut), δελφῡ́ς (delphū́s, womb), Sanskrit गर्भ (garbha, fetus, womb) from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ-, however, (per Vasmer) semantically unsatisfactory. Alternatively, akin to Ancient Greek γλάφω (gláphō, to dig, to hollow), Proto-Germanic *kulbaz (round object), possibly Proto-Celtic *gulbā (beak) from Proto-Indo-European *gelH- (to flay, to scrape).

Noun[edit]

*žȇlbъ m[1][2]

  1. groove, furrow, manger
  2. socket
  3. (by extension) steep gorge
