Probably formed as a root from *jhaṭa < *झृत (jhṛta, “fallen”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *gẓʰr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gžʰr̥tás, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰgʷʰr̥-tós. Doublet of क्षरित (kṣarita).
