From Greek Σαμοθράκη (Samothráki), from Ancient Greek Σαμοθρᾴκη (Samothrā́ikē, Samian Thrace), from Σᾰ́μος (Sámos, Samos) + Θρᾴκη (Thrā́ikē, Thrace), from the island's early Greek colonizers and the general ancient territory in which it lay.
