From Low German Schitt(e), Schiet(e) (shit), from Middle Low German schīte, from Old Saxon *skiti, from Proto-West Germanic *skiti.

Although the word is etymologically and semantically the same as Scheiße, it is generally considered less vulgar and is often used as a euphemism.
