From Ancient Greek Σᾰμᾰΐᾱς (Samaḯās), from Biblical Hebrew שְׁמַעְיָה (shema'yá, Šəmaʿyā́, Shemaiah), from שָׁמַע (shamá', šāma, to hear) +‎ יָהּ (yáh, Yāh, two letters of the Tetragrammaton), literally "God heard".
