Panjehir is composed of the two words "Panj" and "Hir", which in the Pahlavi and Avestan languages mean water, such as " Hirmand ". Ibn Battuta translated the Maghreb traveler Hir in Sanskrit as meaning mountain and considers the five hirs as the source of the five mountains.

We came to a place called Panjhir, which means mountains, and Panjhir means five mountains...
