According to the Wikipedia article on Hispaniola, it appears the English name, Hispaniola, comes from Latin, not Spanish. This seems especially likely, since the English word is spelled the same as the Latin word. Grosbach (talk) 21:12, 25 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
