Which noun sense of "crisp" is this?[edit]

Not the potato snack, presumably. Should there be an extra sense at crisp (noun) meaning something like "cinder", or is it only in this specific phrase? Equinox 00:19, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Nothing relevant in Century. MWOnline uses "burned to a crisp" as a usage example for a nouon definition "something that is crisp or brittle". I am not familiar with such a definition outside of this expression, but they also have "rye crisp" as a usex. DCDuring (talk) 03:59, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just checked the OED, which has lots of interesting senses we lack. #6 is "An overdone piece of anything cooked, fried, or roasted; usually in to a crisp. Also transferred. Originally U.S." Equinox 04:07, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
I thought "cooked to a crisp" was the least likely, but see this. (Many show crisp as adjective, but some exemplify noun use.) DCDuring (talk) 13:22, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
You wouldn't expect "boil", would you? But see this. DCDuring (talk) 13:30, 15 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
